Abortion: Legal, but with Serious Consequences

On January 22, 2010 we commemorated the 37th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the day when abortions, across the board, became legal in this country..

Since then, more than 50 million of our unborn have perished in abortion clinics. But abortion has two victims, the unborn child and the woman. How many of us will reflect on the complications that women suffer through legal abortions? The young woman has few resources to ward off the soothing reassurances of the abortionist and society, in general, that an abortion is just another medical procedure quite free from complications.

But complications do occur. The tip of the iceberg is abortion-related deaths which, though rare, do occur. More common are immediate complications that occur in 10 percent of women, and 2 percent of these are considered major complications. This is not just surgical abortions. An October 2009 study from Finland showed that 20 percent of women using the chemical RU-486 pill had complications.

Three to five percent of those having abortions may be left sterile. Women with post-abortion infections are five to eight times more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy. Damage to the cervix can increase the risks of miscarriage, premature birth and complications of labor during later pregnancies by 300 to 500 percent. The risks are especially true for women who abort their first pregnancies.

Another unappreciated complication of abortion is breast cancer. This makes sense because with the start of pregnancy, estrogen and the other hormones and substances dramatically increase to prepare the woman’s body for pregnancy. If this normal progression is shocked by an abortion, the frustrated breasts may stimulate any cancer-prone cells present. Several studies back this up including:

• A July 2009 study from Turkey shows a 66 percent increased risk of breast cancer after an abortion.
• A recent Chinese study showed a 17 percent increase.
• In 1994, Dr. Janet Darling of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found a 50 percent increase in breast cancer in women who had abortions.

The post abortion complication of the greatest magnitude and hardest to measure is chronic psychological effects. Some researchers have found a temporary feeling of relief followed by negative reactions of guilt, sleep disturbances, regrets about their decision and sexual dysfunction. About a third of women who have had abortions develop an intense longing to become pregnant again to make up for the lost pregnancy. Women who have undergone post-abortion counseling have reported more than 100 major reactions to abortion. Among these are depression, guilt and remorse, loss of self-esteem and self-destructive behaviors.

The post-abortion healing process is thwarted by the denials, from those favoring abortion, of post-abortion consequences. This denial may slow women from seeking post-abortion counseling from such groups as Alternatives Pregnancy Care Center, Caring Network and Rachel’s Vineyard.

The ultimate healing may occur, in the still of the night, when the woman recognizes the small voice as the other victim of the abortion saying “Mother, I am fine, forgive me for being inconvenient, for I have already forgiven you.”

Rather than a day of liberation let us recognize the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade as what it really was, the darkest hour for women.

Effects of Abortion

What kind of concern for women is shown when we put more stress on killing the child than helping the woman to bear her child? The abortion mentality looks on pregnancy as a disease. It does not take women seriously in their unique privilege and power of bearing new life! Some say that the pro-life movement is run by men trying to control women. But did you ever realize that the abortion industry is run primarily by men, who make a lot of money by performing this degrading operation on women? Abortion does not take sex seriously, either. Instead, it makes it easier for men to exploit women sexually. As Rosemary Bottcher, a Feminist for Life, has written, "Abortion reduces women to the status of sex machines which can be 'repaired' if necessary. Abortion helps ease his (the man's) anxiety about sex and relieves him of the last vestige of responsibility. At last sex is really free!"

Many women are coming to realize these facts, and have formed the National Women's Coalition for Life (703-960-4519). Let's stop fooling ourselves that abortion is a woman's "right". The pro-life movement offers women over 3,000 centers throughout the country where they can find compassion, assistance, and real alternatives and life-giving choices. The abortion movement offers them no choice except a wounded body, a scarred mind, and a dead baby.
