STD ClinicEven before we opened a Pregnancy Center just off of Western Michigan University we knew that STD screening would be an integral part to the ministry of APCC. It was only weeks after we opened our doors on Buckout street, near campus, that we began hearing clients ask us if we did STD testing. Although there were those who still came in for pregnancy testing, by far they were outnumbered by those who wanted to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases. It became obvious that we needed to expand our services to include this important health screening along with education on the risks of being sexually active outside of marriage. We began offering HIV screening and found this ministry to be an awesome environment for many discussions about abstinence, starting over, value, real love and spiritual things. That was 10 years ago. Since that time we began dreaming of the day that we would be able to offer a full STD clinic to a population of people in desperate need. This desperate need is not limited to just needing STD testing done but needing someone to show them love and support and to challenge their thinking on why they are living the life they are living. We know that providing STD screening will fill a large need in our community. It will allow us a venue to reach out to the college-age clients who live all around us. By caring for and showing the love of Christ, our clients will see the difference in us and know they are loved here and that it is because of the love God has for us that we are able to love them. Please join us in praying that the STD clinic is up and running in 2010! We already have a wonderful Medical Advisory team, a few RN’s who are new to the ministry and some key medical people who are committed to helping us achieve this goal. We have had many prayers answered in 2009, like funds that have come in to offset the cost of providing the tests, nurses and a nurse practitioner. We have just found a doctor to oversee our clinic! We hope to continue to give you updates as the plans are completed. Thank you to all who have planned and prayed to help establish this much needed service in Kalamazoo. |
